Do photovoltaic solar panels produce radiation?

Solar panels
Before answering this question, we must first have a certain understanding of radiation.

All objects in nature, as long as their temperature is above absolute zero, are constantly transmitting heat outward in the form of electromagnetic waves and particles (emitted when radioactive substances decay). This method of transmitting energy is called radiation. It can be said that radiation is omnipresent. However, there are two types of radiation, the first is called ionizing radiation, and the second is called non-ionizing radiation. In fact, only the first type is really harmful to the human body - ionizing radiation.

There are two main reasons why ionizing radiation causes damage to organisms. First, the energy of ionizing radiation will directly act on biological macromolecules and water, causing molecular instability, molecular rearrangement, generation of free radicals, and damage. These damages may lead to inactivation or incorrect repair of DNA molecules, proteins and enzymes, leading to diseases such as cancer. Secondly, the direct effect of ionizing radiation on water will produce many free radicals. These free radicals have unstable structural states and very active chemical properties, and can easily interact with surrounding substances and even between them. These free radicals act on biological molecules, causing damage to normal structures, which further leads to damage at the cellular, organ and overall levels. In our daily life, we have almost no contact with ionizing radiation. It often exists in laboratories, medical treatment, nuclear reactions of stars, and the decay of radioactive materials.

Non-ionizing radiation mainly includes infrared rays, visible light, wireless radio waves, microwaves and optical radiation. It comes from a wide range of sources, such as mobile phones, computers, WiFi, monitors, induction cookers, etc. that are used daily. The radiation from electrical products that we often mention is actually electromagnetic radiation, which is also a type of non-ionizing radiation. However, according to current research, the energy of non-ionizing radiation is very low and will not affect human health. In addition, whether radiation will cause damage to the human body is mainly related to the dose of radiation, which is the same as carbon dioxide and oxygen. What is the maximum annual cumulative radiation dose that our human body can receive without affecting human health? It's 50 millisieverts. Simply put, radiation may have adverse effects on the human body only if our annual cumulative radiation dose reaches 50 millisieverts. However, the annual cumulative background radiation we actually receive daily is only 2.4, which is one-20th of 50, which means that it is far less than the dose that will cause adverse effects.

Well, after everyone understands radiation, we can finally answer the original question, will photovoltaic solar panels produce radiation? The answer is yes, but the radiation it produces is non-ionizing radiation, has low energy, and the amount of radiation is very small. Will not affect the human body.
